Syria, the last Assignment

Cameraman Yasser al-Jumaili's unseen footage takes us into the lives of Syrian rebels. On 20th November 2013, Iraqi freelance cameraman Yasser Faisal al-Jumaili crossed the Turkish border into Syria with his trusted Syrian fixer Jomah Alqasem. For 13 days in Syria, the two reporters filmed the men behind the frontlines: fighters with the Free Syrian Army, Al-Tawhid Brigade, Al-Nusra Front, Ahrar Al-Sham, and even ISIL.

Only Jomah lives to tell the tale of their last assignment together. His account of their journey vividly portrays the fragility of being embedded in a fast-changing war environment.

Sold Brides

According to the International Center for Research on Women, each year an estimated 15 million girls are getting married before the age of 18, with girls living in poverty being much more vulnerable. While the Syrian war created displacement and poverty, it also created fears of the honor and safety of girls who pushed families to marry their daughters.

Since the beginning of the Syrian war in 2011, child marriage has increased significantly. "Sold Brides" sheeds light on the global phenomenon of early marriage focusing on the cases of Syrian girls that their childhood had to end early because of a forced marriage.

Baghdad's Generator Man

Nine years after the fall of Saddam Hussein, Iraq's national power grid struggles to provide more than six hours of electricity a day. But now a new type of entrepreneur has sprung up to fill this gap. We follow Hadi, a 'Generator Man' who owns two generators but finds that being on call for hundreds of people all desperate for power means that his life is no longer his own.

He wanders the backstreets of Baghdad to talk to some of his customers for whom power has become the most important factor in their day-to-day lives. Of the many ironies of post-conflict Iraq this is perhaps the starkest: how a country afloat on a sea of oil and in receipt of $5bn in US investment since 2003 cannot yet guarantee power for its people.

Once Upon a Time

Children are generally the first to come to mind when victims of war and the aftermath of war are considered. They remain hidden behind the focus on political and material outcomes of war, even when war-induced injuries or disabilities become visible.

Once Upom a Time shows the Iraqi war through children’s eyes. With their hands and faces covered in soot and dirt, children play in the streets, not understanding why their lives changed from one day to another but most importantly not knowing what is yet to come.

Under the Stars

An old Bedouin proverb says: "The elderly are the books of the young" but the modernity may be harsher and more hostile than what the Bedouins have ever known before. How do you capture the entire character of a culture that has no written record, has lived for centuries in relative isolation and exists in complete harmony with one of the world’s most extreme environments?

"Under the Stars" is a documentary series, made of stories and legends told by the guardians of the Abu Dhabi Bedouin oral history and traditions and their descendants living in a world of modernity but whose soul belongs to the desert, beyond the neon skies and skyscrapers.
